Often I have families approach me wanting a savannah cat but are unsure if they can own one or what generations they should be looking at. As a breeder it is my duty to place a cat into a home that will be compatible with the family as a whole plus there lifestyle. My favorite generation for families is the F3 Savannah cat generation because it has the right combination of domestic to wild blood.
They just tend to be easier to handle, hold and train when it come to large groups of people. If you live in a household that cannot keep the doors shut where your cat could potential get out to be hit by a car then you should not own a cat of any kind. Extremely small children such as 1-5 are something I try to avoid. Not because I don’t trust my cats. I don’t trust small children! :) Truth is a child is going to put hair, push, and other wise do something they should not do to an animal. Children do not grasp that dragging kitty by the tail is a no no.
Savannah cats are extremely intelligent; they act a lot like dogs around the children. They seem to understand its a small human that requires understanding. Savannah cats like to play so they can keep up with children. Owning a kitten is the same as owning a puppy when it comes to training. If you don’t teach the kitten to behave properly around children then you will end up with trouble. I have no children of my own, I have kittens! But even though I don’t have kids running around my cats have loved children in their new homes.
