Every country has its own set of rules per the import of live animals, it is your responsibility to figure these out.

Savannahs require CITES paperwork through the fourth generation to export out of the country. First not that the Serval is an Appendix II species: http://www.cites.org/eng/app/E-Apr27.pdf see pg 6 – any felidae species not Appendix I is Appendix II, this includes leptailurus Serval.

Then you must read Animal Hybrids: Amendment of Resolution Conf 10.17:
http://www.cites.org/eng/cop/11/doc/49.pdf read specifically point #3 on the first page: The need for a harmonized understanding of the term was discussed by the Animals Committee at its 14th meeting (Caracas, May 1998). It was noted that, at the time of the discussion of this subject at the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties, when the resolution was adopted, a statement was made by one delegation that the “recent lineage” of a hybrid animal should be understood to mean the previous four generations of its lineage. There was no objection to this atthe time. The Animals Committee agreed that this interpretation provided a good guideline for theParties. and then page 3 point b: b) hybrid animals that have in their recent lineage one or more specimens of species included in Appendix I or II shall be subject to the provisions of the Convention just as if they were full species, even if the hybrid concerned is not specifically included in the appendices;

You must use a Designated Port to ship through, or else you will also need to obtain a Port Exception Permit. But before you do that make sure whichever office you decide to work through is willing to do the inspection.

This article is for customer trying to understand if shipping via airplane is an appropiate option for them. Shipping of cats and kittens is alot easier than initially I assumed when I first began breeding. However that does not mean it can not be challenging to book a flight for the inexperience person.

The Car, Cabin and Cargo: The three most common transportation methods are by car, airplane cabin carry on and airplane cargo. Consider this about carry on, the cabin area of an airplane is not “quite” or “calming” by any means. The kitten sees lots of people they do not know, noises, a baby crying and so on. For those who have flown you know what I’m talking about! In airplane cargo you have less noises and people, the cargo area in most airports is calmer place. The same can be said for a long drive in the car. Often it is noisy in the car. The kitten can smell the new owner so no your smell is related to the car ride. The kitten can also hear the new owner in the car. In many instances it’s just not an option to do anything but cargo. Cargo in comparison so other methods is not more “stressful”. The key to shipping is to interpret things from the cat’s perspective.

If you have decided on cargo shipping method then next you go over this check list of everything you need for within the Untied states;

1. Health certificate: This health certificate must be vet certified. The health certificate will only be good for ten days after being completed. The health certificate will have the address/contact information of the person shipping and person receiving
2. Cat carrier: The crate used for the cat must be approved by the airlines, every airlines is different on what is required for the dimensions of carrier. Some airlines require that you physically take the cat out of the carrier and let the “inspect” the kitten prior to checking in the kitten.
3. Water dish: Airlines are required to make sure the animal flying has access to water. Not all carriers come equipped with dishes.
4. Food: Airlines require that the animal flying has at least enough food in case the cat need to be boarded over night for any reason. As of 2012 the USA regulation for hours of flight is maximum of 13 hours including the time in-between flights
5. Airline ticket: Some airlines require to allow two hours in-between flight times (Changes of planes). So airlines such as Delta have a program called Delta dash, they charge extra sixty dollars maybe more to “rush” cat to a flight with less than a two hour layover. International shipping can require more time.

A few things that have to be kept in mind when you are arranging a flight. If you a buyer of a kitten this is normally the breeders job;

1. Departure time: What time will the kitten be leaving?
2. Arrival time: What time will the kitten arrive?
3. Temperature: Depending on the airlines you need to know the forecasted temperature. Such as shipping a kitten to Texas during the summer.
4. Regulations: What regulations does the airlines you are using have on shipping cats.

**Warning: If the airlines tells you to put “diapers” at the bottom of a carrier beware because the cat could get bored and chew the plastic. More often you use shredded newspaper.*

A kitten is emotionally and physically ready to go to a new home no earlier than 12 weeks of age. It is the breeders personal call should the kitten need more time. At 12 weeks they should have had two sets of shots, off mother’s milk and learned essential behavior from mother/siblings. It is common for a female kitten to be kept till 14 weeks since female kittens require more healing time from de-sexing.

Why are breeders offering kittens at 6 to 8 weeks?

Some breeders just don’t know any better. Often they are inexperienced new breeders. Many customers immediately push back when hearing they have to wait till the twelve week old mark. Causing breeders to have buyers wanting kittens earlier and seeing other breeders letting kittens go early. Unfortunately some backyard breeders allowing kittens to go early to move kittens quickly.

Why should you wait till the age of twelve weeks at least?

First lets explain my terminology, “baby kittens” are kitten of the age one week to eleven weeks of age. The number one reason you should wait till twelve weeks of age is baby kittens are extra vulnerable to sickness at this age. The stress of placement can cause a young baby quite a hardship such Coccidia which normally occurs when a cat is under stress. Some other considerations;

1. Vaccinations:  At eight weeks to eleven weeks kittens are still getting over crucial vaccinations. Vaccinations should be done with care as they are a lot on such a small feline. When giving a vaccination it is common practice for a kitten to be kept one week to insure the have no side affects from vacination.
2.  Immune system: A kitten’s immune system is developing between eight and twelve weeks of age in a crucial manner. The immunity from their mother is wearing off at about six to eleven weeks at that time the immunity from vaccinations should be taking over.
3.  Illnesses:  Because the immunity system is developing at seven to eleven weeks kittens are more susceptible to illness including upper-respiratory problems and diarrhea. Such illnesses are not to be taken lightly at such a young age.
4. Socialization/Behavior: The kitten continues to interact/socialize with both its littermates and human companions with play. Sometimes the play gets quite rough when a more aggressive kitten sometimes asserts their dominance over another sibling to let them know who’s boss. If a kitten is being too rough they will often be correct by the siblings or mother during this play time. So this time is crucial for the kitten learning appropriate behaviors.

Clavamox is one of the most popular and widely used antibiotics for felines. Clavamox has few side affects. Clavamox is Amoxicillin and clavulanate combination. These two drugs act together to treat or prevent bacterial infections in cats. Amoxicillin alone is an antibiotic related to penicillin but has a broader spectrum of antibacterial action than penicillin. Clavamox is also less irritating to a cats stomach then Amoxicillin along with out the Clavulanate. Clavulanate is an inhibitor of an enzyme produced by bacteria. Clavulanate has no antibacterial effects it simply acts as an inhibitor of an important resistance mechanism. Comes in two forms:

• Liquid Clavomox
• Tablet Clavomox

Calavomox is a prescription drug so you must have a vet prescribe clavamox to you. Always give this medication to your pet as directed by your veterinarian. If you use the liquid form of Clavomox be aware it must be refrigerated and does not last very long after being opened.

The rambunctious personality that never gives up will pull at your heart strings. And before the night is over you warm lush spotted hubby curls up at your feet only to enhance your love.

Majority of discriminating clients want a lanky legs, wispy tall ears and specifically exotic looking feline that has that treasured loyalty plus irreplaceable . All this the F2 Savannah cats have to offer.

Why are Savannah cats so EXPENSIVE?

The very expensive cats are F1 or F2 Savannah cats because they normally are produced in a small litter of one or two. A mother cat may only have one or two litters a year at most. Special care is taken to make those litters thrive which results in a higher price. Extremely high demand also plays a factor since so few kittens are produced. If you plan to show your cat you will pay more for a show quality cat. Only “C” level Savannah cats can be shown. Breeding cats are the most expensive to buy compared to pet cats except with the F1 Savannah cat generation that is so hard to produce.

What is the normal market price for savannah cats?

Savannah cat price range can vary depending on the quality of the cat. General price range is anywhere from $1,000 through 15,000 depending on generation. Lower generations such as F4 through F8 only cost around $1,000 – $2,000 as great pets! Males may be sterile but they are so rare that they are priced high. In fact most males do get bigger in size. We can speak to this since our male Serval cats are two times bigger than out female Serval cats.

Well I’ve got good news for you! For the most part even the lowest generations of savannahs have many of these traits. Every cat is going to be different however I know for a fact, even with the F8 savannah kittens I have placed, savannahs are energetic loving members of the family.

Back in the day, most cat furniture was covered with carpet. This was a good choice, because it looks good, and it offers a material that cats obviously like to scratch. Some of the cat furniture manufactured today, especially hand-made models, still use carpet. Most carpeting today contains fabric loops. Unfortunately, after thousands of scratches, cat claws can cut through these loops, resulting in unsightly and messy shredding. You’ve probably seen this yourself.

Your cat can literally hang its self on this kind of loop. A breeder brought this to my attention after a buyer came back crying that she had an old piece of furniture she had neglected to throw away, be careful!!! When in doubt do the safest thing possible!

However, with today’s technology, engineers have developed an acrylic material specifically for use in the cat furniture industry. This material commonly referred to as fake or faux fur has become increasingly popular. The main reason for this popularity is the fact that it does not contain loops, so it doesn’t shred like carpet does, and therefore tends to last longer than carpet. The drawback is that since it doesn’t offer the resistance that carpet does when they scratch it, cats don’t like it for scratching as much as they like carpeting.

As a result, most cat furniture that offers faux fur also utilizes sisal rope as a covering. Generally, the vertical posts are wrapped with sisal rope, and the platforms and enclosures are covered with the acrylic fur. Sisal rope is made from the Agave Sisalana plant. Cats seem naturally drawn to this material, and unlike the acrylic fur, sisal rope offers the resistance that cats need to tune their claws and stretch their muscles. Some cat furniture manufacturers that use carpet as a covering also offer sisal-wrapped posts, and in most (but not all) cases cats will scratch on the sisal instead of the carpet.

Any information you find on the internet, unless it is research conducted by a zoo or scientist, can not be used as factual. This is information I have gathered on the subject.

Hybrids are often sterile because the set of chromosomes from one species cannot pair during meiosis with the set of chromosomes from the other species. The Dobzhansky-Muller model theory was formed in the 1930s that suggests hybrid incompatibilities that cause thing such as death or sterility are caused by genes that have evolved from a common ancestor but diverged in each of the species. The best explanation for sterility in animals so far with limited studies is the unequal crossing over during meiosis that causes deletions and duplications of genetic material. If this always happens because the chromosomes do not align then the animal is sterile. If a critical gene is deleted or duplicated the animal may not survive to term or even to adulthood.

Just because you want to create a hybrid does not mean it is genetically possible. For example: Ligers are the offspring of a Tiger and a Lion. These are members of the Panthera genus. Since they belong to the same genus it has been possible to breed them. The lion and tiger may be subspecies of each other because they can mate to produce offspring. I would have to check this out but at least you get why hybrids happen even though they are sterile.

Grooming savannah cats is the easiest thing you will ever do! Savananh cats require lithe grooming the basic brushing with a proper tool should help with any shedding. All cat breeds tend to shed there winter coats even when indoors this happens right at the beginning of spring. Breeding felines also tend to groom them selves more at this time as they are more stimulated by hormones. A brush once a week as shown above should eliminate any issues. Some non-standard cats have long hair. Savannah cats with long hair do need brushing daily or weekly depending on length. Of course every cat does loves a brushing every now and again just for the attention. There you go its just that easy!

When you do bath a cat never use human specific shampoos or conditions. Always use a product made specifically for cats. These products should help remove odors and oils that can build up on the cat fur. Remember your feline friend is closer to the slim, grim and general dust mites around you house so it is important to make sure they are cleaned even when to the naked eye they may look clean.

Seri is a sweet girl but being that she is a high % F1 she will need a
little patience probably to settle into a new home. They bond very deeply with their owners and change is hard. She is a very good girl, not hyper at all, uses her litter box meticulously, talks in sweet chirps and purrs, typical savannah as she does not like to be picked up and carried around or held, but you are able to pick her up and move her off the bed or something like that. She will sleep with you but is usually at the bottom of the bed.

Amazing animal to watch and interact with, I also think she would actually be fairly easy to leash and harness train after she has your trust. She loves the back of her neck scratched. She has had no problems with other cats and has actually mellowed even more since being spayed.

She lives with my 75% F1 female Painite and they are the best of friends. She has always been an easy breeder and is gentle with the males so I see no issues with other cats. She has never ever sprayed to date. Not even when in heat. She recently had all blood work done, is in perfect health, spayed and up to date on all shots including rabies.

Where does the name come from: Kopi Luwak is the most expensive coffee in the world, and I LOVE COFFEE. The Azteecs viewed the cacao bean as the gold standard when they led an empire of almost 15 million people so much in fact that it was their form of currency. The cacao bean also was used as money in Central American markets long after the Aztecs were gone, as late as 1858. So I searched for a coffee and chocolate related names and picked Kopi because she is so rare and sweet.
