Why are breeders offering kittens at 6 to 8 weeks?

Some breeders just don’t know any better. Often they are inexperienced new breeders. Many customers immediately push back when hearing they have to wait till the twelve week old mark. Causing breeders to have buyers wanting kittens earlier and see other breeders letting kittens go early. Some are just backyard breeders allowing kittens to go early to move kittens quickly.

Why should you wait till the ago of twelve weeks at least?

Biggest reason is baby kittens are extra vulnerable to sickness at this ago, stress of placement can cause a young baby. Baby kittens are those of the age 1 week to 11 weeks of age.

1. Vaccinations:  At 8 weeks to 11 weeks they are still getting over crucial vaccinations. When giving a vaccination it is common practice for a kitten to be kept one week to insure the have no side affects from vacination.
2.  Immune system: A kitten’s immune system is developing between eight and twelve weeks of age in a crucial manner. The immunity from their mother is wearing off at about 6 to 11 weeks at that time the immunity from vaccinations should be taking over.
3.  Illnesses:  Because the immunity system is developing at 7 to 11 weeks so they are more susceptible to illness including upper-respiratory problems and diarrhea.
4. Socialization/Behavior: The kitten continues to interact and socialize with both its littermates and human companions with play. Sometimes the play gets quite rough when a more aggressive kitten sometimes asserts their dominance over another sibling to let them know who’s boss. It is at this time that whiskers get chewed off during these scuffles and sometimes a few minor scratches can occur. The good news is that the scratches will heal and the whiskers do grow back.

Clavamox is one of the most popular and widely used antibiotics for felines. Clavamox has few side affects. Clavamox is Amoxicillin and clavulanate combination. These two drugs act together to treat or prevent bacterial infections in cats. Amoxicillin alone is an antibiotic related to penicillin but has a broader spectrum of antibacterial action than penicillin. Clavamox is also less irritating to a cats stomach then Amoxicillin along with out the Clavulanate. Clavulanate is an inhibitor of an enzyme produced by bacteria. Clavulanate has no antibacterial effects it simply acts as an inhibitor of an important resistance mechanism. Comes in two forms:

• Liquid Clavomox
• Tablet Clavomox

Calavomox is a prescription drug so you must have a vet prescribe clavamox to you. Always give this medication to your pet as directed by your veterinarian. If you use the liquid form of Clavomox be aware it must be refrigerated and does not last very long after being opened.

Well I’ve got good news for you! For the most part even the lowest generations of savannahs have many of these traits. Every cat is going to be different however I know for a fact, even with the F8 savannah kittens I have placed, savannahs are energetic loving members of the family.

Back in the day, most cat furniture was covered with carpet. This was a good choice, because it looks good, and it offers a material that cats obviously like to scratch. Some of the cat furniture manufactured today, especially hand-made models, still use carpet. Most carpeting today contains fabric loops. Unfortunately, after thousands of scratches, cat claws can cut through these loops, resulting in unsightly and messy shredding. You’ve probably seen this yourself.

Your cat can literally hang its self on this kind of loop. A breeder brought this to my attention after a buyer came back crying that she had an old piece of furniture she had neglected to throw away, be careful!!! When in doubt do the safest thing possible!

However, with today’s technology, engineers have developed an acrylic material specifically for use in the cat furniture industry. This material commonly referred to as fake or faux fur has become increasingly popular. The main reason for this popularity is the fact that it does not contain loops, so it doesn’t shred like carpet does, and therefore tends to last longer than carpet. The drawback is that since it doesn’t offer the resistance that carpet does when they scratch it, cats don’t like it for scratching as much as they like carpeting.

As a result, most cat furniture that offers faux fur also utilizes sisal rope as a covering. Generally, the vertical posts are wrapped with sisal rope, and the platforms and enclosures are covered with the acrylic fur. Sisal rope is made from the Agave Sisalana plant. Cats seem naturally drawn to this material, and unlike the acrylic fur, sisal rope offers the resistance that cats need to tune their claws and stretch their muscles. Some cat furniture manufacturers that use carpet as a covering also offer sisal-wrapped posts, and in most (but not all) cases cats will scratch on the sisal instead of the carpet.

• Savannah x Domestic = A
• (Savannah A) x (Savannah A) = B
• (Savannah B) x (Savannah B) = C
• (Savannah C) x (Savannah C) = SBT

The “A” , “B” , “C” or “SBT” means how many savannah cats are in the pedigree of the cat. The ABC’s follow the “F” classification of the cat explained above. The ABC’s are used for new breeds of cat that still allow out crosses of different breeds of cat to help the development of the breed. Interesting for you to know almost every breed of cat was developed by breeding several different breeds together.

Honestly what really matters is you find the right cat for you lifestyle not the classification of you kitten. Some of the best kittens I have produced have been A or B kittens, talk to your breeder about what is best for you :)

Any information you find on the internet, unless it is research conducted by a zoo or scientist, can not be used as factual. This is information I have gathered on the subject.

Hybrids are often sterile because the set of chromosomes from one species cannot pair during meiosis with the set of chromosomes from the other species. The Dobzhansky-Muller model theory was formed in the 1930s that suggests hybrid incompatibilities that cause thing such as death or sterility are caused by genes that have evolved from a common ancestor but diverged in each of the species. The best explanation for sterility in animals so far with limited studies is the unequal crossing over during meiosis that causes deletions and duplications of genetic material. If this always happens because the chromosomes do not align then the animal is sterile. If a critical gene is deleted or duplicated the animal may not survive to term or even to adulthood.

Just because you want to create a hybrid does not mean it is genetically possible. For example: Ligers are the offspring of a Tiger and a Lion. These are members of the Panthera genus. Since they belong to the same genus it has been possible to breed them. The lion and tiger may be subspecies of each other because they can mate to produce offspring. I would have to check this out but at least you get why hybrids happen even though they are sterile.

Grooming savannah cats is the easiest thing you will ever do! Because they really don’t need any grooming. However some non-standard cats have long hair. Savannah cats with long hair do need brushing daily or weekly depending on length. Of course every cat does loves a brushing every now and again just for the attention.

There you go its just that easy!

She will sleep with you but is usually at the bottom of the bed.

Amazing animal to watch and interact with, I also think she would actually be fairly easy to leash and harness train after she has your trust. She loves the back of her neck scratched. She has had no problems with other cats and has actually mellowed even more since being spayed.

She lives with my 75% F1 female Painite and they are the best of friends. She has always been an easy breeder and is gentle with the males so I see no issues with other cats. She has never ever sprayed to date. Not even when in heat. She recently had all blood work done, is in perfect health, spayed and up to date on all shots including rabies.

Where does the name come from: Kopi Luwak is the most expensive coffee in the world, and I LOVE COFFEE. The Azteecs viewed the cacao bean as the gold standard when they led an empire of almost 15 million people so much in fact that it was their form of currency. The cacao bean also was used as money in Central American markets long after the Aztecs were gone, as late as 1858. So I searched for a coffee and chocolate related names and picked Kopi because she is so rare and sweet.

F1hybrids cattery wanted to provide a information video to the public that quickly outlined the savannah cat breed. In the video our savannah kittens produced by F1hybrid cattery and breeding cats that we either having in our savannah cat program currently or are ancestor to cats we now bred. In the video featured on animal planet tv show cats101 it stated that savannah cats can weight 40 pounds. That is a gross overstatement of the average savannah cat. The average savannah cat should weight from 15 to 20 odd pounds. Forty pounds would be a record in my book! Also in the animal planet tv show cats101 it shows a cat with rosettes which are non-standard.

The Genetta cat (GT) is a dwarf cat breed. The genetta is being developed using breeds such as bengal cats, munchkin cats, savannah cats, Domestic short hairs, and Oriental Shorthairs. The goal of the Genetta breed is to create an exotic spotted or marbled cat that appears to resemble the African genet. The African genet is not a cat. The Genetta was created by Shannon Kiley in 2006,to be a hybrid that has the wild look without all the aggressive behavior.

• Non-standard types: Genettas do come in Non-Standard types. Because the Genetta is a designer mix of breeds non-standard recessive genes do appear such as long standard size legs.
• Personality: In personality the Genetta is very sweet as a small pet, playful, friendly and inquisitive small cats. Many kitten buyers are attracted that this domestic cat retains kitten like qualities when fully mature plus they look like a kitten in size!!!
• Price: If looking for exotic or wild looks with out the thousands of dollars designer price tag for your pet then this is your cat!
• Long legs verse short legs: Since the Genetta is trying to resemble the African genetta they have short legs. How ever litters do end up with both long-legged and short-legged kittens. Even if both parents have the short-legged gene they can still produce kittens that have both leg lengths in the litter. Genettas with long legs just as affectionate just not desirable.
• TICA Status: The Genetta cat is a recognized breed by the TICA but is still in experimental status. Because Genettas are an experimental cat breed they can not be shown at TICA cat shows. However they are register and buyers will receive get your kitten’s registry papers.
• Founder of the breed: The Genetta Cat was founded and named by Shannon Kiley with the idea to develop a cat that looked like an African genet for the exotic enthusiasts who either cannot own a genet or want a more docile animal with the look of a genet. The first litter of Genettas was born Dec. 13, 2006 at Pawstruk Cattery.
• Dwarfism gene: The dwarfism gene causing the short legs is a dominant gene, meaning that at least one parent must carry the gene and any cat that is short legged carries the dwarfism gene.
• Colors: The Genetta can be spotted or marbled in coat pattern and can come in the colors brown, black, silver, or snow colors.

• Prices listed bellow vary depending on percentage, quality and pattern
• F1 savannah cats price $9,500 – $15,000 for a bottle raised baby
• F2 savannah cats price $4,000 – $6,000 for a bottle raised baby
• F3 savannah cats price only $2,500 – $3,500
• F4 or later price only $1,500 or less!

If any one charges you $40,000 for a cat its a scam! Some people confuse the fake ashera cat scams are the same as savannah cats. Not true!!! The ashera cat is just a savannah cat being passed off as an amazing new breed.

In the world of purebred cats it’s pretty common for a breeder to ask around a thousand for any breed. There are several factors behind this price. Some these factors are:

• Buying breeding cats
• Buying food
• Buying medications such as flea and heart worm preventatives
• Spaying of cats that end up not being breeding quality or do not produce
• Cattery maintenance bills
• Buying cat litters (Does not seem like much unless you have several cats)
• Any emergency medical bills (Example you cat swallows a feather and chokes)
• Ect…

If you have been looking at prices listed on breeders websites you will find that breeding right cost significantly more. Breeding rights are registration papers that give the right to keep the feline in tact so that they may reproduce.

A savannah cat breeder wants to achieve the best quality in every generation. This means they want the best possible savannah females and savannah males in there breeding program. Those cats will cost upwards of $3,000 to $10,000. Those thousands of dollars factor into the price of kittens. Many times just because you want to breeder cat does not mean the dam you have picked is fertile enough or hearty enough to produce viable kittens. Those females will have to be spayed and placed into a pet home. Finding pet homes for older breeders can be difficult. Getting one cat fixed cost around $200 if you have a good veterinarian. It’s medical bills that can really eat away at breeders. For every cat you have you increase the risk of catching something from another cattery. Let’s say for kicks you buy the most amazing breeder male from a high ranking cattery that claims to have the best bloodlines int he world. Then you battle the kitten having ringworm. You probably paid around $7,000 for this amazing breeder male and the originally cattery you purchased from is claiming the kitten got the illness from you. You end up losing all those thousand of dollars getting rid of the worms on your bill. It just goes to show you never know what can happen and you have to be prepared for those kinds of bills.

I will add to this article later but I hope I’ve out lined the basic of the cost of breeding cats which contributes to what the kitten will cost the buyer. In the end cat breeders rarely make enough to live comfortably. If a breeder pays of what it cost to breed the cats its a good year.

My keeper F5C savannah cat female of 2011 (F1hybrids First ray of Sunshine) I have been waiting for has arrived! I’m over the moon for the F5C savannah female. Early spay and neuter of kittens and cats has been occurring for over 25 years or so in The united states. Young age altering is the term for spay and neuters done between ages of 6 and 14 weeks of age. Altering of a kitten or cat between 5 and 7 months of aging was founded by traditions rather than for virtually any specific medical cause. Pedal back a few years when safe pediatric anesthetic techniques were not readily available, it was common to wait until a patient (the cat) was older enhanced the safety of surgery.

Individuals working to decrease the problem of surplus dogs and cats in the United States pioneered the idea of early altering. While medical sterilization remains the most beneficial in means of population control, delaying the surgery long enough for sexual maturity to take place defeats the idea. Animal shelters now have mandatory altering often provided before being adopted out. Early spay and neuter continues to be questioned, mainly by pet buyers wondering if early altering will stunt the growth of the animal. Several veterinarians who are not really acquainted with the medical and anesthetic procedures may not alter animals at an early age.

Some vets have concerns that early altering could increase the incidence of feline lower urinary tract disease. Also that it could affect skeletal development. However such concerns have generally been proven mistaken by many studies. Thus early spay and neuters are becoming widespread and accessible. A study recently published by researchers at the University of Florida discovered no substantial differences in the physical and behavioral characteristics of cats altered at 7 weeks of age as opposed to others altered at 7 months of age.

Essential research continues to be done by Drs. Michael Aronsohn and Alicia Faggella at the Massachusetts SPCA on the anesthetic and surgical procedures for early altering of dogs and cats. In 1993, two papers had been published detailing their research on early altering of a huge selection of kittens involving the age of 6 and 14 weeks. They examined several anesthetic protocols making recommendations for secure handling and anesthesia in patients in this age. Some little changes to surgical method are necessary for patients within this age bracket. Also younger patients should be handled somewhat differently before, during, and after surgery. The alterations in surgical protocol are pretty straight forward and easy to undertake, as well as the experience of these veterinarians using early altering in kittens is becoming extremely positive.

Julian the BST snow spotted Bengal cat was produced in the spring of 2010. At first Julian had a thin face for a Bengal but as he developed he turned into a great example of a snow spotted bengal cat! Very typy snow spotted male.

Julian went to the cat show and was used an example of bengal cat type out of 29 other kittens. While at the cat show the president of the bengal society remarked that he really like Julian and he does not like snow coloring in general. We appreciate such an awesome comment.
