The Bengal is medium in size domestic breed from crossings the small Asian Leopard Cat (Refereed to as the ALC) to a domestic cat (preferable a spotted cat bred with no white patches). The earliest mention of an ALC/domestic cross was in 1889, when Harrison Weir wrote in “Our Cats and All About Them”. During the 1960′s there was an epidemic of feline leukemia virus. At that time it was discovered that most wild cats seemed to have a natural immunity to the disease. Loyola University began a research program in the 1970s to investigate if this natural immunity could be bred in or replicated, thus the breeding of bengal cats. The make excellent companions if raised correctly with an exotic being spotted short bodied cats with egg shaped heads and domestic temperament. After 4 to 5 generations of Bengal-to-Bengal breeding meaning no outcrossing, the bengal breed is recognized for championship competition by most international domestic cat associations including TICA, ACFA, GCCF, and AACE.
